Day 12 (28 July 2016) - San Francisco's Chinatown and GG

On our second full day we ventured over to San Francisco's Chinatown, primarily driven by our of our interest given it is one of the largest Chinese communities outside of Hong Kong. Toronto is the largest community. China town is a few blocks away from Union Square so fairly central to in the city.

San Francisco's Chinatown

The city takes on a stark transition around Chinatown with the blocks dominated with Hong Kong like back streets and cantonese banter on everyone's lips. The shops stock dried fish and fruits and take on a Sheung Wan like appearance. Chinatown seems to be its own world and I can imagine a number of its older citizens have not integrated into the wider San Francisco community.

We also spent some time at a ("famous") book shop called Citylights. The book shop seems to be a mecca for readers. While the book shop is interesting for the comments sprayed around its walls, the surrounding area is also interesting for its character.

Views of the Golden Gate Bridge

There are a lot of places where you can take pictures of the Golden Gate Bridge for ease and proximity to the city we chose Chrissy Fields Park. The summer fog meant our chances of getting a clean picture of the Golden Gate bridge was low. But here's the example of contrasting element of the city. Clean views across the city contrasting with the fog blanket over the bay constantly covering the bridge. Waiting for an interruption in the fog proved to be fruitless. Maybe an autumn return visit is necessary as a clear view of the bridge awaits and future meeting with friends. Coming back is a constant part of travelling so leave a few stones unturned.
