Coastal France - Day 6 and 7: Dune du Pilat and Le Mans

Introduction

After sunny San Sebastian the holiday was over and it was time to head back to London (home) the drive from San Sebastian to London was long and it was to be broken up with stops along the way. The route was primarily long motorway driving through France and our route is shown below:

Dune du Pilat

The dune is very long stretching along the coastline with a couple of points where there are rails and tread boards to aid climbers. The main car park is the starting point. In peak summer when we went the car park was full so you have to drive along the adjoining road to find parking.

We took a slightly unconventional route walking through the road side bush until we could access a starting point to climb the dune. The dune are high and if you choose to climb it away from the aids then expect hot sand and grueling climb.

The view looking out across the Atlantic is spectacular a number of people walk along the top of the dune a number went down the other side of the dune to the beach. There are boats on the beach below to take you across to the islands you can see in the pictures above.

Summer sees the temperature soar so make sure you have enough water.

Le Mans

After the Dunes we drove to Le Mans where we stopped for the night. In the morning we went to museum at Le Mans. It has some spectacular cars and history and spend a few minutes on the track to hear the roar of the cars if you're lucky enough.

On our final day after the museum it was a long monotonous drive back to Calais and old Blighty. We were glad to be home
