Day 9 (25 July 2016) - Lake Tahoe

Introduction

Our Lake Tahoe trip was only a single day sadly with the number of days available we choose Yosemite over Lake Tahoe. We stayed in South Lake Tahoe and as you can see from the previous post the location is phenomenal. With our full day in Lake Tahoe we were spoilt for choice on what we would do. We opted for family based activities. We did not do any hiking trails as we had already done a few of those in Yosemite.

Kayaking on Fallen Leaf Lake

We drove out to Fallen Leaf Lake and rented some kayaks for the family. We explored the edges and the centre of the lake for an hour. The lake is serene and easy to kayak on for even the youngest kids. Getting to the edge of the lake where the rental companies are is a pain. Its a long way in-land on small roads and if you are driving a monster truck like ours you are driving pretty slowly with the occasional reverse or hugging other cars as you try and pass each other on the narrow roads.

If you are going to kayak I would suggest making the additional effort of finding the road down to Pebble Bay and kayaking there. There is a island and the area seems a lot more interesting to kayak around. Additionally it seemed busier and more interesting out there.

Driving around Lake Tahoe

For the rest of our day we drove around Lake Tahoe with its various different view points. The days at Lake Tahoe were warm but the evenings colder than we expected. The journey around Lake Tahoe is a couple of hours but each of the stops along the way has a charm of its own.

Pebble Bay at Night

For the evening we ventured out to Pebble Bay again to the vista point to look at the stars. The cliff's are precarious at night so take a torch! But the stars from there are simply breathtaking you can actually see the milky way right above you. It was cold but was well worth the effort of getting there. There is very little other ambient light so your views of the skies are unfiltered. The photos did not work as they should have so that going to have to be work in progress for later in the trip, possibly when we're back out in the desert.
